Have You Seen The Magpie?
This book is an accordion book that features the traditional scroll, Chinese painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival by painter Zhang Zeduan. It shows the landscape and everyday life of people in the capital city Bianjing 900 years ago, a city in China now known as Kaifeng. The painting celebrates the festive spirit and hustle and bustle of the Qingming Festival and is read from right to left.
The painting is reproduced in Have You Seen the Magpie together with hand-drawn characters hidden in the painting by Yu Rong which helps children to engage with, read and understand the painting through the medium of play as they search for the different characters and the roles they play in the painting.
The reverse of the accordion book is also opened and read from right to left. It tells the fictional story of Duan’Er, (painter Zhang Zeduan as a child), and an adventure he has along the river, the people that he meets and the magpie that draws all of these characters and their motivations together as it flaps and flutters along the riverside.
